2017 - A Storm Record Breaking Year

Posted on Wednesday, 10 March 2018

2017 was an astonishing storm record breaking year.

With seventeen storms, ten of those turned into havoc-causing hurricanes. Five of those hurricanes was category three or higher.

We’ve been worse off..

Although it may seem that there was an endless amount of hurricanes last year, we were much worse in 2005.

Back then, Mother Nature ran through the entire alphabet (apart from Q, U, X, Y and Z – due to the lack of names beginning with these letters!) We then had to go through the Greek alphabet. That year, twenty-eight storms formed, and a record of fifteen storms turned into hurricanes.

When is storm season?

Storm season starts on June 1st and finishes on November 30th.

Why was 2017 a record breaking year for storms?

Two of the storms that formed, Irma and Jose, had winds of 150+ mph, both at the same time in the Atlantic. This is the first time that storms have done this in known history.

Storm Maria went from a tropical depression to a Category 5 storm in less than three days, which is most likely the record for fastest intensification in the Atlantic in history.

Because of storm Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee and Maria. 2017 set a record for the most cyclone energy generated in September.
